Prof (Dr) Sabu Thomas, reputed polymer scientist and Professor of Polymer Science & Engineering, School of Chemical Sciences, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam, Kerala, has been appointed as Vice Chancellor of the University for a term of four years. He has been holding temporary charge of Vice Chancellor for the past few months.
A BTech degree holder in Polymer Science and Rubber Technology from Cochin University of Science and Technology, he received his PhD from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur.
Prof Sabu Thomas began his career as a Technical Officer at Bayer India Ltd., Thane, Bombay. He joined MG University, Kottayam, as a Lecturer in 1987.
He subsequently held several positions in the University such as Reader, Regional Director, School of Technology and Applied Sciences, Professor and Director, School of Chemical Sciences, and Dean of Technology and Applied Sciences. He is the Founder Director of International and Inter University Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, MG University.
His areas of academic research include polymer nanocomposites and cellulose nanocomposites. He has several publications and patents to his credit. He is also the Chief Editor of `Nano-Structures & Nano-Objects’.
Prof Sabu Thomas is a recipient of many awards and honours for academic excellence, which include the Fellowship of the Royal Society of Chemistry, London, FRSC, in 2012, Bronze Medal of the Chemical Research Society of India and the MRSI Medal of the Material Research Society of India in 2013.
He received his first Docteur Honoris Causa from University of Southern Brittany, France, in 2015 and his second Doctorate Honoris Causa from University of Lorraine, France, in 2016.
He was the recipient of Fulbright-Nehru International Education Administrators Award 2017 and TRiLA Academician of the year Award 2018.
